Joe Wessels, the host of the CinDaily podcast, had me on his program yesterday to talk about New Media Cincinnati and specifically the recent “tempest in a teapot” situation that occurred over the past week. It was a great opportunity to tell the story of New Media Cincinnati and how this social media community has evolved over the past few years.

Note: I was recently asked to write a guest article for the Career Achievement Network, since they were about to open up their blogging and forums to every member.  I’m crossposting the article here as well, since from time to time I get questions about starting up a personal blog.

5 Ways to Blog for Personal Achievement

We’re drawn toward authenticity. Being yourself and communicating who you are effectively remains one of the main qualities of successful people. Online, one of the best and most effective ways to do this is through maintaining a blog.

If you’ve ever wondered what you might say, here are five examples to get you started:

1. Tell a story. Think about a time when you’ve saved the day. Write about what happened and what you did.
2. Document a process. Chances are you know something that could be helpful to others. You can describe the solution to a problem and help others understand it.
3. Share news and information. Found an interesting article? Planning an event? A blog is a great way to describe what’s going on and share what you’re learning.
4. Blog without blogging. Comment on something someone else has said on their blog. Provide thoughtful insight that moves the conversation forward.
5. Ask for input. Let’s say you’re puzzled about something or have an opinion on a certain direction you’d like to take. You can set up the situation in a blog post, and ask others what they think.

These are just a handful of ways you can blog, and I’m sure you’ll discover others as you get the hang of it. Find your voice and be yourself. In time, the content on a blog can become the online advertisement for who you are and what you do. It’s an essential part in establishing your personal brand.

If you’re a douchebag in real life, guess what? You’re an even bigger douchebag online because social media amplifies who you are.

You could be a real, genuine human being making an effort to be useful to others.

Or you could be an anonymous troll whose only purpose appears to suck air and tear others down.

Same is true from a business perspective. A lot of businesses are not ready for what social media can do because at their core, they are not ready for what social media will do.

As you think about how you might use social media, don’t forget your people skills.  Dale Carnegie was one of the best social networkers, even though he was around long before the internet. If you haven’t read How To Win Friends and Influence People lately (or ever), it might be time to pick it up. Use my affiliate link if you’d like or get it somewhere else.

Much of what happens in the new media space is highly experimental; especially when new tools are released. Google Buzz came out last week, and we talked about it at last weekend’s New Media Cincinnati Second Saturday. There are a lot of things that need to be worked through, and there are certainly some promising things for it.

I noticed C.C. Chapman (someone  I so look forward to meeting in-person someday) had stared a “Morning Buzz” bit with an extended update over at his buzz page. I thought this was a neat idea and have started to play around with it this way myself. I call these early morning updates “uncaffeinated buzz”, because I write them when I first get up in the morning, before having any coffee.

It feels uninhibited and freeing, and I feel like it’s helping me find (or reclaim) my voice. I’ve thought about bringing these buzz posts over here and using them as blog posts. Or maybe it will just be a bonus for those of you who are following me over there.

At the beginning of the year, I realized I needed a better way to manage my time and projects I’ve been working on. While I’m not patient enough to learn the system found in Getting Things Done (affiliate link), you might be.

Through some searching on YouTube, though, I found a resource I found was this video from the guys at Internet Business Mastery, talking about how they work the GTD process with mind mapping.

I’ve since downloaded and have been using FreeMind for my own projects. My system still needs tweaking, but it’s been very helpful in getting a 90,000-foot view of what I have going on.

I’ve been asked a number of times recently in the local Cincinnati community about how the different social networking platforms relate to one another and why someone would want to participate in any or all of them.

There are a lot of parallels to our online and offline lives.  Consider your presence online as participating in a digital neighborhood. It’s your digital neighborhood, consisting of all the places where you hang out. These analogies could probably be fleshed out a bit further, but go with me on this, okay?

Office

The office is where business gets conducted. Transactions are processed.  The office is the company’s website. I don’t currently work for a company, so I’ll point to the official New Media Cincinnati website for the time being.

Home

If the company website is the office, then the blog is the more informal hangout, where guests are welcome to come and hang out, join in on discussions. If we had a cold one, we’d offer it to you, etc. Have you seen the pictures of the family? Chances are, you’ve stopped by my “home” to read this post. Welcome!

Business Meeting

LinkedIn is analogous to the business meeting. It’s where business connections get made, and (typically) professional types of discussions happen. Think of it as the Chamber or Association meeting. Are we connected over there?

Office Watercooler/Conference Call

From time to time we need to get up from our desks and head to the break room and chat with other coworkers. At other times, we have conference calls to be on, where we’re talking about a specific topic, or the conversation has a common sort of context.  That’s what Twitter is.  We hop in to share some information, ask questions, and so forth. We also can share information around specific topics with hashtags (for specific chats or events).

Remember those chats with your neighbors along your backyard fence as you’re hanging out in your yard? Pretty casual and very friendly.  Facebook is the digital equivalent of the backyard fence. Let your hair down a bit and kick your shoes off if you want.
