You… are a professional communicator, parent, family member, teacher, friend, or just someone who wants what you say to be remembered. But, you ask, how do you do that, exactly?

MADE TO STICK

In their book Made to Stick (affiliate link), brothers Chip and Dan Heath describe their journey of analyzing messages that have stuck with us. They looked at urban legends, proverbs, and other forms of communication that people across history have been able to remember.

They have been able to identify six characteristics of messages that persist. They even came up with a handy, sticky acronym to help us remember them: the SUCCESs. (more…)

Over the past couple years, I have had the privilege of being interviewed for my thoughts on domestic violence awareness, social media, and searching for a job in the 21st century.  In one case, I was asked to contribute an article to a newsletter.  I have put links to all of these, where available, on the Media page.

Daniel Johnson, Jr.

Daniel Johnson, Jr.

Someone recently asked me to provide a short bio for myself.  I like how this turned out and am going to put it on my About page:

Daniel Johnson, Jr., from Cincinnati, Ohio, has been spending time in the new media playground for over eight years, working on various projects and connecting with others online and in-person. He has 13 years of experience developing solutions that provide information to help people do their jobs and make better business decisions.

As the Founder of the New Media Cincinnati social networking group, he organizes and runs monthly events where people in the Greater Cincinnati area come together to discuss how emerging technologies can be used for fun and profit. Daniel has spoken around the Cincinnati area about how social networking tools can be used in effectively building an online presence.

His super powers include making connections easily and bringing out the best in others, his contagious enthusiasm, and skill in explaining complex subjects in ways that are simple and easy to understand.

WordPress Theme Goodness

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

I’ll be experimenting with some various WordPress themes, now that it seems I know enough to get myself into trouble.  Feel free to leave any thoughts in the comments.

Current theme (as of this inital post): DeepBlue

Update: Somehow while creating and/or saving this post, the text appears to be copied onto the previous posts.  I’ve checked the back-end, and the posts appear to be fine. Hmm.

Update: This appears to have been a problem with index.php. I have also changed the header tags to use h2 instead of h3. Little things mean a lot, it seems.

On the moves to WordPress

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

About a month and a half ago, I announced that I was making the move from Blogger to WordPress.  It’s taken some time, but I think I’m getting the hang of this blog migration thing.

Moving a blog with lots of content

I have even moved my oldest and one of my largest blogs, Journey Inside My MInd.  It took some effort — that blog with over six years’ worth of content had to get brought in in five pieces.  Here’s how I did it:

  1. Create a new blog with my WordPress.com account to use as a placeholder.  In my case, it was journeyinsidemymind.wordpress.com
  2. Import the blog content from the Blogger blog to the new WordPress.com blog.
  3. Export the WordPress.com blog to an XML file.
  4. Import the XML file to the self-hosted WordPress.org blog, provided that the file is under 2 MB.
  5. Since the file was not under 2 MB, open the XML file and break it up into smaller pieces that were under 2 MB, keeping the main structure of the file intact.
  6. Note about Step 5: that is where having experience in hand-editing the Journey Inside My MInd podcast feed has been handy. I clipped out at the <item> tags.
  7. Import each smaller, bite-sized XML file into the WordPress.org blog.
  8. Verify that the blog posts were imported successfully.
  9. Delete the WordPress.com blog.
  10. Update FeedBurner to reflect the new source feed URL.

Progress thus far

So far, I’ve moved the following blogs:

Future Plans

I plan to move QuotesBlog over and to ramp up production for How I Got My Job.  But first I’m going to merge the Journey Inside My Mind Podcast episodes into the blog, since I’ve opted to let jimmpodcast.com expire.
Moreover, I know I’m definitely going to need to tweak the existing WordPress themes for my blogs to better suit my tastes and branding.  Right now they all look the same.  That’s okay for now, but it won’t last.
Feel free to share any thoughts, comments, or suggestions in the discussion below.
