LinkedIn recommends groups for you to join
I received an email from LinkedIn this morning. They’ve suggested I join these groups, since some of my connections have also joined them. The reasons why I won’t are intrinsic to the group names.
I find it interesting that they know so much about my social graph on LinkedIn to be able to suggest groups in the first place, and I like that they’re looking for ways for me to get more out of their website.
Here’s what the email says:
Daniel, join these 4 groups we’ve recommended for you
Daniel,
Joining a LinkedIn group makes it easy to stay up-to-date with classmates, colleagues, and other professionals.
Here are some groups your connections have joined.
- #CincySM Branding Group
- Cincinnati Women Bloggers
- Social Media Europe
- Girlfriendology
The only one that appeals to me is the first one on the list. I’m familiar with the #CincySM group and know this is a subgroup. The other three are not relevant to me. I’m actually familiar with the Cincinnati Women Bloggers and Girlfriendology groups, and their target audience has two X chromosomes whereas I have an X and a Y. In other words, these groups are for women and about women. I specifically know Debba‘s marketing strategy in building and managing the Girlfriendology community involves focusing exclusively on female friendship. She’s able to point to an all-women audience and would probably want to keep it that way.
The other one is for Social Media Europe. I’ve spent a lot of time over the past four years building and cultivating a brand around Cincinnati, Ohio USA. That group is not relevant to me either.
This is not meant as a slam against LinkedIn. As I said on the outset, I’m encouraged that they’re looking for ways to make my use of their service more useful, and I look forward to the next email with groups suggestions.
I would be remiss if I didn’t plug the New Media Cincinnati LinkedIn group. And if you’d like, feel free to hit me up on LinkedIn as well: connect with Daniel Johnson Jr on LinkedIn
